Our lake assoc. (George Lake in Lupton) is considering a weed control program for 2006 & beyond . They would use Rustin Lake & Pond Service to try & kill off the milfoil in the lake. Supposedly this company has treated North Dease Lake, Londo Lake & Loon Lake (all in the Hale area) Has anyone fished these lakes before & after they were treated? I'm very concerned about wiping out too many weeds & destroying the fishing on the lake I spend my weekends at.

I live in an association with two lakes and we spray a couple times every year. The lake I live on is one of the worst lakes I have ever fished, while the other lake is hands down the best lake that I have ever fished. They are complete opposites of eachother as far as depth and strucutre goes, so that has something to do with it. But overall, I don't think it will hurt the lake too bad, unless they're using Sonar.

I hate it when they kill the weeds in lakes. But then again, I don't live on one, and the lake my parent's cottage on is a sand bottom, clear lake so weeds don't do very well until you get to deep water (over 8' or so).
Is there a section of your lake that does not have homes on it? Like maybe several hundred feet or yards of shoreline that could be left "weedy"? I know simply spraying a lake will have an effect on the whole lake, but if a section is intentionally left alone by the spray boat, it might leave some habbitat for the fish and not ruin the entire lake.

Double ended sword here.... The milfoil is a very evasive species and will eventually take over and choke the lake so bad it wont be useable by fish or humans.
Houghton Lake took the "eradication" approach against the milfoil issue several years back, before it totally choked out. It's been three long years but things are getting back to a more normal state. No telling how bad it would be right now had they not treated the lake.

Then that part would be hit hard by everyone. The fish will survive. It won't take out all weeds.

Dang, you caught me. My next question would have been where exactly is this lake and when is there a tournament on it! LOL!!

My inlaws live on a small lake in the Ann Arbor area that is unfishable from the early summer on due to the weed growth. It is a shallow lake that turns green as soon as the temperature rises. Some of the residents on the lake wanted to have the lake sprayed, but couple with the largest lot and house put a stop to it, because of concern with the copper in the treatment getting into the drinking water. Other than color treating the water, is there another product to treat weeds that doesn't contain copper sulfate?

Ann Arbor area? Ground water? Don't they have city water throughout most of that area?

The city of AA itself has a municipal water system, but many of the people living in surrounding townships (such as myself) still have wells.

Lived in AA for 3 years while attending UM in the late 80's. Only place I ever fished was above and below the dam on the Huron just west and north of town... along huron river parkway. Never caught anything.

That's suprising. Lots of bass in that area.
