I just purchased a 1976 Ski Nautique and I will be rebuilding the motor over the winter. I thought I would replace the stringers while I have the motor out as it would be so much easier to do it now and get it done right so I don't have any problems in the futrue.
Any one ever done this before? How much am I looking at? They are currently wood (I think), but can I replace them with fiberglass so they would not ever be a problem again?
Let me know if you have any suggestions.
Thanks,
Captain Jay

Is there a reason you want to replace them? Replacing stringers is not "routine maintanence" by any means. If they are not rotting, why would you replace them. If everything is seated and sealed properly, they should last forever. Glass is not completely impervious to water intrusion either. If they are rotted out, thats a different story.

Probably a good point. If they don't need it I wont get involved with it. I will just have to wait and see what it looks like when I get down in there.

That's the best game plan, imo. Try to get your hands on a moisture meter to do a complete analysis. Even if the glass looks good, there could have been seepage. If all is well, I would suggest doing a thorough bilge cleanout and repainting. This will give added protection.
