Everytime we hit the lake, we catch at least one walleye with a lamprey on it. Does anyone else find this as well? I thought they were in the great lakes mostly catching on to lakers. What do you do or what are you supposed to do with them? Any info. or input???

Lake St. Clair ( I guess that is the lake you are talking about) is big enough that many people consider it an unofficial Great Lake. Also, the Walleye do move around a lot and it is very possible that the ones you catch migrated in from Lake Huron or Lake Erie. Over the years, maybe one out of every 100 Walleye that I caught would have a lamprey on it. But, I did catch a Carp earlier this year, in late July I think, that had a lamprey on it.

Those are silver lamprey (native species) not sea lamprey (the exotic species that caused so much destruction of lake trout populations). For more information try this link...

Yeah, that sure looks like the one I got on a walleye 2 weeks ago. Nasty little critters. I'd sure hate to get one on me.

About 1/2 of the Skies we get have them on them, and the Lamprey's get the plier treatment. Nasty looking buggers.

I have caught walleye in the river off of Algonac, with them being spit out of the walleyes mouth's; 2" to 5" long, i couldn't tell you what species they were.

So what is the proper way to dispose of the evil creature? Can you tell me exactly what the best way to kill one is?
Pinch with plyers? Cut off?
When killing the Lamprey what effect does it have on the fish?
Thanks,
Mosdet

In the spring its not unusual to catch walleyes with lampreys on them in the upper st clair river. In the fall we catch cold water species with them also.If I manage to keep them on long enough and the fish hits the concrete with the lampreys attached I take them off and feed them to the gulls.

Well at least you found a good use for Gulls

Im not by any means promoting the feeding of seagulls. As much as I despise them they have some sort of valuable purpose in eating all the other nuisance creatures we catch.

I seen a salmon caught this weekend with 1 ft long lamprey that was 1 inch in diameter.I stuck my cigerette up its mouth and then smashed its head with a hammer. It still wanted to suck and attach itself to something after I stug the burning hot cig up its center of the mouth but not after I hammered it
