Anchored in the north channel at 9 PM and promptly caught a undersized walleye. At 11:05 I put this 57 inch fish in the boat.

Did not have enough energy left to catch another one. Pulled anchor at 12:15. Usual spot in 38 ft of water.

Was using turf as usual. I was actually anchored up a little shallower than I wanted to be once the cross wind died down so I kept casting to the same spot in the deeper water. All fish came within a few feet of each other just about as fast as I could get the line back in. I wonder if these fish run in groups or if there was just a concentration of food in that spot.

I have spoke with people who dive SCR up by the bridge. I recall him telling me about a large object in the water like or sunken barge or something. but he said the Sturgeon were stacked behind it. Possibly its something like that?

Hope Those Were Catch And Release. Nice Fish
The 54 and 57 went back strong. Tagged the 49 inch fish and put him in the live well. From there to the table and freezer. He had a 21 inch girth and weighed 28.11 pounds. A couple of the fillets were simmered in water for about 15 minutes to remove the fat, then coated with seasoned bread crumbs and baked. The meat from these fish is delicious. I released a 58 this year and 53 as well as some smaller fish including another one in the slot at 43.5. Also took part in some sturgeon research by providing a couple of fish for the DNR to take stomach samples, age, measure, tag and release. I don't feel too bad about keeping a legal for the table. Using my tag puts me out of the sturgeon business for the rest of the season though. So far it is the only fish registered at Blue Water Bait.

Great job Treeman.
Sounds like you had a blast. I guess the reason they have a one fish limit per year and you have to have a tag before you fish is their way to tell us the fishery is in fine shape and if you do it right you can keep one for the table.
rendotwo, please return all your fish! :p

I hope your having a better day today Ed. There is nothing wrong with being conservation minded. In fact, I am a member of the board of directors at Perch Point Conservation Club in an effort to give back to what I take from. We do alot of good things.
What I do is I believe called selective harvest. It is somewhere in the middle ground.
The reason I post here is course for bragging rights, but also to create interest in this wonderful fishery. Sturgeon provide an opportunity to catch the largest freshwater fish of ones life. There is nothing I would like to see more than Gone Fishing Jr. to put a 50 lb fish in the boat this weekend.
The other reason is that when more conservation minded people become involved in a resource, whether it be ducks, deer, dove, pheasants, walleyes or sturgeon, the resource improves rather than declines.
I have no objection to those that release all of their fish or those that keep all of them as long as they act within the law. It is important though to give back some. Join a conservation club or Pheasants Forever or Trout Unlimited or the Wild Turkey Federation. Whatever floats your boat. But whatever you decide to do, please make sure to Get out and FISH.
Thanks Ed!! :) :) :)

You have a great attitude and outlook on the fishery Treeman. I just showed Jr your post as he was off to soccer practice and he is jazzed at the opportunity to catch a big one. If we don't get one this time, I bet you will get a PM from him to see if YOU will take him for a trip. I usually do OK fishing but these fish have me scratching my head. Congrats again on a very productive outing! :)

I really hate to see these posts although I definitely know where you guys are coming from. You try to give an honest report and help the fellow members and get questioned/slammed about whether you released the fish or had over your limit. I think I am partly at fault. As a moderator here, I need to delete those post and send a PM about judging others without all the information. Sorry about that and I'll try to do better in the future although I really don't have time for this childish play. I want to fish and not baby sit and I'm sorry if I offended anyone but this is getting old! :(

Forums are for any discussions , heated or NOT. I have heard MANY complaints from others (privately) that the MODs are trigger happy with playin' fish/game cop & shutting threads down needlessly. as long as there isn't any threats and nobodies cussin' up a storm -- let them go at it!
I have noticed a lot less pictures & details - but as long as somebodies tryin' to be a control frEEk... you'll get that. Most of the guys here either PM me - or they flat-out email me.
I get pics emailed to me - I'd RATHER see 'em posted here for ALL to enjoy.
The reports SHOULD be shared , but they shy away...
Many of the guys would say that they got somethin' you can have a hot bite of....LOL
There's always going to be someone stirrin' the pot - be adults & give them a big , fat IGNORE. Or report them to a MOD!!!
:yikes:
BTW treeman - d@mn nice prehistoric piscados there!!!!
I bet you were tired as a dog.....

Did you know you can make boots, belts and hats out of Sturgeon skin? Last year on EBay they had a Sturgeon scutes belt buckle. Over in Sturgeon Bay WI. there is a Bar that has a number of mounts on the wall showing all sizes of this wonderful fish.
Keep the reports coming, I truly enjoy the pic's and story.
Thanks again
