Great job on the walleye swamprat!! Only one thing you forgot....Cut there necks and let them bleed out....Fillets end up white as can be and it changes the taste!! Try it.....that's the first thing I do now!!! An Oldtimmer taught me that trick!

I can testify to cutting the throats! A REAL OLDTIMMER..(Houghton Laker...:p ) taught me that trick a couple of weeks ago and it does make a difference.

Nice job on the fish too!

I can't dispute the cutting and messing up the cooler thing. But fresh out of the water put on good ice, top off with good ice when home and tilt the cooler with the drain open. Walleye or Perch will be firm and white. Ice slows the heart less blood pumped, no water entering the eyes after they dye and firms them up for cleaning. Just my opinion!!

Ice over and under the fish with the cooler tileted with the drain open will keep fish in top condition. Any doubt look at the eyes . They should be clear and more importnat look at the gills they should be normal not light colored or white. <<<< Just my method --not knocking how anyone else . H.L. nails the fish and has a few old timer connections ;) that are better than any internet.

No need to mess up your cooler guys. Use an extra 5 gallon bucket, put a few inches of water in the bottom, slice the fishes throat and put them in the bucket head first. A couple minutes is all you need, blood will drain out and then throw 'em on the ice. Beauty fillets !!!

Ed got it right...most imprtant thing is to keep them iced down!! nothing worse than seeing those fish go all pale!! The throat cutting just adds to that!! The white fillets and change in flavor.......my wife loves perch and her second fav is walleye....after the throat cutting....now she says she can hardley tell the difference in taste.....it gives it a milder flavor! I've got one youngster convinced on it....ain't that right smiley!
Oh yea....no need to cut the perches throat.....they do just fine as is....I just toss them in a cooler full of ice! ...or on the ice outside my shanty

yes i think you are both right, the ice is below the fish so you could see them all in the picture.i learned a different method years ago from a guy i work with.walleyes up to 17inches i leave alone, but 18-24 in.i remove the skin, turn the fillet over and cut down along the blood line on both sides.it will be about 1/4 in. wide, some guys tear if off but i cut all the way through with the knife.you eliminate that bad taste and those bones that are in there.:) any fish over 24 inches i just give it away or throw it back.i did see someone post this method but i can't find it.:dizzy: i really can't see a differance in the taste between the small ones and the big ones after cleaning them that way.it only takes a minute, give it a try.

I've always iced the fish down & let them sit to firm up...... I never heard the cutting their throats thing til this post......

Do you cut them just under the gills like a trout? I'm going to give it a try.

My wife has always preffered perch to the walleye....... We have always caught more waleyes during more of the spring, summer fishing season...... Perch in the fall........

yep...cut them right under the gills.....I also like whales suggestion of cutting them then putting them in a bucket of water for a minute....would save some heavy duty cleaning!
