Angler makes rare white perch catch on Lake Erie

White perch aren't even really perch, at least not in scientific terms. Able to tolerate salt water -- they're most at home in ponds connected to the sea -- white perch are, in fact, considered to be a kind of temperate bass. They're most closely related to white bass, striped bass and striped bass hybrids.

Whether that's a good thing or a bad thing is open to debate, given that white perch are a non-native, exotic species. They've earned some enemies because, while they feed on everything from insect larvae to crustaceans, they also eat the eggs and fry of more popular game fish, like walleyes and bass.

Quote from the article:

"He kept the fish, and had it weighed at Poor Richard's Bait and Tackle. It registered at one pound, 7.5 ounces. That's a half ounce heavier than the existing state record.

Because anglers have to beat a record by a full pound to get their name in the books, Frazier's fish didn't qualify."

Can that be right, that you have to beat the old record by a a full pound to get in the record book? I'm guessing it's a typo, and they mean full ounce.
