In your opinion,

Would a .308 caliber rifle, shooting 150gr bullets, be large enough to kill a moose?

1 round through the lungs is the shot....and we dont want the moose to go very far after the shot....

Any opinions?

Thanx

I used a .308 in Ontario with no problem.Alaskan moose might be a little tougher. In Ontario a lot of guys use a .30/.06, .300 are popular too.
If you use a .308 use the 180 grain and sight it in good..you'll have no problem :)
Have fun too....moose hunting is a blast!

I agree; .308 is fine but 150s are a little light for moose. If your rifle does not like 180s you can try 165s.

A Nosler partition or Sierra Game King should be fine, if you want something tougher try the Hornady Interlock or Nosler Accubond.

I would stay away from the Ballistic Tips, Nosler states that .30 cal BT and below are intended for medium game only.

Nothing in North America will survive a .308 thru the lungs; you may need to track it for a while though.

Thanx guys,

Currently, I live in Ninilchik Alaska...and moose season started 2 days ago!

Ive been bowhunting them for the last couple days....and last night I came across a nice bull. He had 2 brow tines, nice paddles, and about a 40" spread.

We have antler restrictions in most of Alaska...must be minimum 50" spread, or have 3 brow tines...so this one wasnt a legal bull.

Anyway, I came across him at 80 yards, and studied him for a half hour through the binocs....nice bull but not legal. And no way would I have been able to put a stalk on him to get into archery range, the bush was too thick around him.

So this got me thinkin, Ive got my .308 up here (for sheep, goat, and blacktails)....if I get into rifle range of a big dandy bull, sure would be nice to have the option of stalking him with a bow, or shootin him where I stand with a rifle...

Im glad to see the .308 will do the job :)

Thanx guys!
