Areas to scout?

This is gonna be my first trip out to do some deer hunting in quite some time. Planning on rifle season, however if I can get my hands on a bow and get comfortable with it again ... I will head out in Oct. (between the salmon trips). Any pointers on areas to scout? All the family I had that lived up north (Houghton Lake) moved back to the big city. So unfortunatly I'm gonna have to hunt state land. Where would I find a map with all the boundries for the state land, and any recommendations on where I should start scounting would be appreciated.:help:
