Thinking of getting some, any opinions plus or minus on it and if anybody has it, what do you layer it with?
I have an old ASAT suit I bought about 10 or so years ago, and the stuff is unbelievable. I have since tried several other camo patterns, but think that I may get a new ASAT suit before deer season. I was out in the woods the other day with a friend of mine and he was wearing his ASAT pants. At one point he was around 80 yards or so away from me, and his legs just seemed to disappear...even with a green background. The thing that makes ASAT work is the neutral colors and good contrast, plus it doesn't blob together like many of the big name camos. Check out the link below to see how good this stuff looks in the woods. Also, if ASAT isn't your thing, I would recommend Predator camo, which is also a very open pattern and works really well.

As far as layering I would recommend a good wicking layer against your skin such as underarmour, or anything polyester...stay away from anything with cotton. Over that I don't think that fleece can be beat for lightwieght and warmth, plus it is breathable too.

I have a question about camo..
I saw a test done where the military started experimenting with small squares instead of the mix and match patterns. The squares were about 1 inch in size, some uniform, others larger or smaller on differnet patterns...
Anyhow, they went threw this big testing phase with all kinds of experiments and found the squares gave better performance to the tune of like 60% better.
How come we have not seen this crop up in markets? (I have not seen it anyhow)..
Any ideas?
Thanks,

Murphy you can find that stuff on ebay. Do a search for digital camo. If you notice a lot of the new pics in the newspapers and what not, you'll see alot of our boys over seas are already wearing it.
I watched a two-hour show on the development of that camo on the History channel. The military put a lot of money into the development of this pattern. I would like to think that our Military backed by government funding can do a little better job at actually breaking up a pattern than the Bill Jordans and Stricklands of the camo industry.
If you notice all the commercials for those camo patterns, it's always in well lit areas and the camera has an amber lense. This was what makes the patterns appear to work so well.
I'm really considering getting a 3d leaf ASAT suit this year. One of those mesh like suits with the nylon cutouts. I have the Mossy Oak break up and I like it a lot, but I just think that the ASAt would do much better due to the contrast as mentioned in an earlier post. Since that is how deer really see, by contrast, having the two extremes of light should definatley benefit the hunter when he's in tree in the fall with no foliage to cover. Add the rough edges of the 3d leaf and you've got yourself one heck of a camo.

That's all I wear is a 3D suit!!!!
I put on normal clothes, then my CarHartt overalls, then the 3D stuff.. Works like a charm and my wife says I vanish.
I bet I spent over $1000 on camo clothing over the years.. Then I discovered the $45 3d stuff... BAAAAAAA.. :banghead3

That's what I like about it...it dries very quickly and you can wear all the cheap warm stuff underneath.

I have the ASAT 3d leafy suit I bought last year. Amazing stuff.
Dress for the weather..whatever it may be, and throw teh ASAT on as the outer layer and hunt.
Not nearly as "pretty" as the realtree, Mossy oak stuff etc....but those companies make patterns that SELL first....ASAT is made to CONCEAL your outline...and is the best I've found for that.

I have been thinking about getting an ASAT 3D Leafy Suit (http://store.yahoo.com/astacamo/asulle3dsy1.html) as well.
I am 5'10" and weigh 190 (I know, I know, I am trying to loose some of it).
What size should I order? I am thinking large, but I have no idea as I have never bought something like this before.
Thanks!

Murphy,
$45 for a suit or was that an exaggeration? (ASAT runs ~$135 for a suit, I'm 6'4", 250# so I'll need a XXL or so).
If it was $45, where did you get it/what brand?

Miejers !! Yes.. I paid about $45.. (On sale sometime in May I think)..
Its just a mesh with the 3D camo flaps attached to it. I can not comment on quality other than the fact I have had it for 4 years and it still holds up perfectly. Its been stepped on, dragged, soaked, washed, etc etc..
Meijers!!:yikes: .. Its were I get most of my hunting supplies.. (not including bow)
Hope this helps.

I wisht I'd a had it Bry....My good Resistol is too freakin' hot till it gets pretty cold out ;) I got a leather one in May-hee-Ko you'd love. ;)
Dtrain....I'm about the same size (-10-15 pounds :p ) and I wear the large. Little loose in the early season but I can really bulk layers on late and it's plenty big to cover.
They have zip cuff legs and that's a big plus for me.

I'm 5' 10" 180#'s and the large 3D suit was too big... I was swimming in the thing... Got a medium and can still wear insulated bibs under it no problem...
P.S. the camo is the shizzy... Just don't wear in near an open flame... trust me you don't want to know... ;)

i bought the asat 3-d suit last season, and on opening day i got out of my stand around 11am i was walking back to my truck, when all of a sudden out of nowhere here comes 6 does. well i just dropped down to 1 knee and i was about 8 yrds from the runway they were on, now i was right in front of an
old dead briar thicket but them deer never knew i was there, i even came to full draw just to see if i got any reaction but thee was none. IMHO asat is the very best camo on the market today.

I have a similar story with my old Real Tree coveralls. I was tracking a doe, first archery kill, when I heard a noise in front of me. Another doe 10 yards away. I stood perfectly still and this deer walked right at me. She came close enough I could have touched her. She got about 1/2 her body lenght past me, when she realized that the tree("me") was watching her. That was fun, and just 5 feet away from that was my doe.

I saw that new digitized military camo and it looks pretty sweet. I was thinking about picking some up just to have it. I started off with the old military camo and it worked great I got it from my step brother who was in the Marines it has a few holes in it but I got my first deer in it.
Also, I do have to agree with some of you, that you find your best deals on camo clothing in late spring I have gotten some really good deals exspecially from Wal-Mart. I do not want any Wal-Mart bashers responding my fiance works their, it pays the bills and for the most part you cannot beet their prices.

Is the ASAT website still the only place to buy the 3D leafy suit? It would be nice to try some on first. Are the leaves noisy? I guess KJ's arrowed coyote kind of answers that one but thought I'd ask.

I picked up an ASAT 3d off of ebay for about $20.00 under retail, there are a few ASAT dealers that will list items from time to time, you have to watch. I don't know of any stores that carry any at this time. I am looking forward to using it this year as I have spoke with many who say it is topnotch. I have used Predator Fall Brown and LOVE it as well. Natural gear has been okay although their snow camo is top notch IMHO. I have had some luck with Sticks n limbs as well although not many people seem to use it anymore.
