Someone tried telling me there have been reports of wild boars in the Marquette area and parts of the Keewenaw. It's hard for me to believe. Can anyone confirm this. I hinted someone probably saw a few bear cubs, but this person insisted otherwise.

There was an article a month or two ago in some magazine - I think it was QDM. The bottom line is that wild boars are creating MAJOR problems in some of the states to the south of us. they have moved as far North as Southern Indiana and Ohio. In many cases they were started by those that escaped game farms or from "armchair" biologists that thought they were smarter than the local DNR guys.
Their numbers are exploding and they are having problems keeping their numbers in check. The farmers hate them because they destroy crops, they are dispacing many other game birds and animals (including deer) by taking over the habitat. . . Not a good situation. From what I read, wild boars in Michigan would not be a good thing.

I thought they have been up there for a while now but that may have just been rumors. I remember talking to a guy in a bar up in the central U.P who was talking about problem boars. I thought he was talking about bears that is how we started talking. He said some escaped, reproduce and they shoot them ever chance they got. This was 4 or 5 years ago. I am sure they are not very common or we would hear a lot more about them.

It was indeed Quality Whitetails. Wild Pigs DESTROY the areas they inhabit! They would make a very poor addition to our forests!

Being they are not a game animal in our state,I do believe you can shoot them anytime during the year.I had heard a story too awhile back about some running around somewhere near Saginaw if I remember correctly.

I think I would have heard about this if they were around my neck of the woods (Marquette/Gwinn/Baraga/Houghton), but hey I really haven't been looking for them.
It's possible that some of the NMU or MTU coeds might be the root cause of these rumors.
There are some boar hunts offerred on private land up here, though. Maybe someone got their story wrong.
We'll be on the lookout, though!

Non-native game escaped from a game farm, can be taken by any means once it has been outside the confines of the enclosure for a minimum of 12 hours.
This is state law. Pretty unenforceable. But hey...this is Michigan, it's what we do.
I'm sure that escaped pigs are inevitable. I'm sure those local to such high fenced operations know how to implement checks and balances.

They escaped and or let go about 1-2 years ago. It was in several papers, and it was also reported that they were open game. But that was at least 1-2 winter ago so I wouldn’t think they would have surveyed the winters.

I was kind of thinking that maybe some of the ones on private land maybe escaped. I have never seen one or know of anyone who has, but I really doubt any of them buggers could handle a copper coutry winter. With thenm little legs the wouldn't be able to move in the snow. lol

They need to get some bud nippers and nip this in the bud. Like now. Lots of big woods in the L'anse area. And those darn things could spread for miles of just woods. I can honestly see this turning into a BIG problem. I will be following this one for sure.

I had to do some work in San Antonio Texas earlier in the spring, so decided to get some hog hunting in, let em tell you, that article is accurate, these things are not friendly, they come right at you!!
Also, when we went to get a weekend hunting permit for $40.00 (Crazy in Texas) it came with 40 tags, they told us if we ran out, don't worry about it, to kill as many hogs as we see, leave them there and the other hogs will take care of the corpses.
While this was a completely differant type of hunting i am accustomed too, we do not want these things in Michigan!! They are considered a nuisance animal in most other states, your allowed to hunt them year round with no bag limit, day or night. They multiply like rabbits, and can live through the winters. BAD NEWS!!!

I bow hunted wild hogs in South Texas last March, and let me tell you, if hogs are present in your area, you will know because they tear the living heck out of everything with their massive rooting, wallowing, feeding, etc.. They are very destructive to everthing growing in the dirt.
They were fun to hunt there, but I don't think you want them here. If you think we have land management issues for deer now, just wait until a few hundred hogs take over your area.
JMHO.
