Squirrel gun

Thought I would try something new this year for squirrels. How would a air gun work?, can they knock a squirrel out in a 30ft-50ft tree? are they very accurate shot after shot? If so which are better? Thanks.

Sure. A nice pellet gun can kill racoon, woodchuck, rabbit and squirrel. My dad has a Beeman air gun - break barrel - single shot. It cost around $300 w/o a scope. It is very accurate. They are nice and quite with no recoil and still shoot around 1000fps. He prefers to hunt squirrel with his 10/22, but both of us have killed many animals with the pellet gun.

I have taken a lot of squirrels with my pellet gun. You will need a good pellet gun, ( mine is a RWS model 54) it is spring loaded and shoots over 1000fps. Mine is very accurate. I found I need to hit the squrrel between the eye and ear. I used to aim for the eye with my 22 but with the pellet gun I found the need to put a finishing shot into the squrrel with the eye shot a few more times then I would like. Also there is recoil in a beeman and most spring pellet guns ( not mine)that you need to know. Don't put a rifle scope on the pellet gun. Make sure you put a scope that is for a pellet gun. You will find out that a lot of pellets won't shoot good in your gun. you will need to try different ones to see whitch ones shoot the best. Good luck.

It will certainly kill them! I question the ability to get them out of the tree at times though. I had numerous times I've hit them in the head with .22lr and they are not knocked from the limb. Now, this has happened most times when the squirrel is on the side of the trunk, probably because they are holding onto the tree more than when sitting on top of a branch. They are dead mind you, but their claws are still stuck in the bark. I would think that with a pellet gun, you might have to be a little more concerned with picking you shots in those types of situations.

I have not attempted to take squirels with a pellet gun since I was a kid, so I don't have any experience with todays hi powered pellet rifles. It sounds like a lot of fun though!

Lots of fun. I have a friend just south of Flint that told me he had lots of squirrels. I went out there one day to see for myself. He told me I could park down by the woods. I was gone 1 hour and when I came out and drove up to his house to thank him for letting me hunt he ask me why I had guite so early. I didn't here you shoot. He thought I didn't see any. I told him I took 5 shots and have 5 squirrels (limit). It was one of those days that every squirrel in the woods was barking and moving around. LOTS OF FUN YOU BET.

My wife is going to hate to see these new Cabela's catalogs coming every month or so. What do you shoot in them? in the 177 they have 5 different pellets. page 520 fall catalog. I thinking field point would be good enough. Thank for help

Hey poz, does that winchester have a dovetail mount for a scope? I'm looking to buy a good pellet gun , but i want a scope on it.

Try the crossman Dome. They work the best in my RWS and also work good in my Son's Beeman. I use the match ones in a large box (500 I think), I also use the heavest in there line. You will find out that you will have to fine tune your sight each time you go out. I could go on and on but then you wouldn't have all the fun in learning about hunting with a pellet gun like I did. :lol: Goog luck and if I can help you some more just ask.

Check the game laws or ask Boehr in the law questions forum but i beleive the .177 caliber is illegal when using the pellet gun to hunt game with. I think you have to have a .22 cal or larger in pellet or air powered guns to legally use them so you may want to ask before spending $300.00 on a gun you can only shoot cans with. Just check first I may be wrong but i heard that somewhere I am sure.

I think you are wrong. You can use almost anythink to take small game with even a rock, There is a time just before deer season that you can't use a 22 rim fire for small game but you can use a pellet gun, shot gun and ect.

According to boher it has to be larger than .177.
