was working in shiawassee in a very remote area and there was a farmer sitting on a tree stump shooting a .22 Cal rifle in a river. wondered what he was doing walked over and he was shooting carp. didn't think this was legal and unethical at least. is it poaching?

He better hope there isnt a rock behind that carp and he misses and the bullet hits him instead.

I am not one to defend lawlessness, but what's the harm in ridding the waters of those big brown trout???
If this was as remote as was said, who really cares?

First off there is a good chance he may skip the bullet off the water of rock and kill someone. Secondly, There is no way to retrieve the game. Josh

Whether the bullet will skip depends on the angle so it is not a given that it will skip. But, the point about retrieving the fish is a good one.

Maybe so, but that's not a chance that should be taken regardless of the situation. I believe that's one of the golden rules of firearm safety.
And in my opinion, if you've got to get rid of carp, use a bow and make some sport of it. It would be a lot more fun!!

Not positive on the law now days, but used to be illegal to discharge any bullet into or at the water? Whether your shooting at anything or not. Might be question for Boehr.

It still is illegal to discharge any bullet into or at the water! And you don't wanna get caught, or it's going to cost you your firearm, and a heafty fine!

when we go to michigan we stay with friends on ther farm we put bottles in the water and fire at them so your not aloud to do that over there then.
i think it is still illegal. and besides, i wouldn't want glass in my stream.

Yes. It is discussed a lot here in the spring and very early summer. But, in all the trips to Harsen's Island or along the shores of Lake St. Clair, or to inland lakes I have only seen a couple of people bowfishing over the last 30 years.

When i was a kid in Fenton,I used to see a lot of dead carp in the spring with holes in them when I asked about it I was told the DNR was shooting them in the mill pond to thin them out.I never saw the guy doing the shooting but sure did see a lot of carp with holes in them.this was 30+ years ago,but it might of been more common than you think, old ways die hard.
