FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
Cabela’s Helps Hunting Heritage Defense Committee Fight Proposed Dove Hunting Ban.

Howell, Michigan 7/25/05 – The Hunting Heritage Defense Committee will join other outdoor organizations at the 97th American Casting Association National Tournament, August 6, 2005 at Cabela’s Dundee, Michigan retail store located just 20 miles north of Toledo and 20 miles South of Ann Arbor.
.
HHDC is a grassroots ballot question committee formed to oppose the 2006 ballot initiative that would ban the hunting of doves in Michigan. Our mission is to defend Michigan’s hunting heritage from well-funded out-of-state special interest groups such as the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) who want to ban all hunting. To do this, we will be teaming with other committees and organizations in Michigan in a united front against those who are funding this initiative.

As sportsmen and women across this state are coming to realize, the issue of whether or not we hunt doves has been drawn into the larger battle over whether we have the right to hunt at all. Anti-hunting groups worked most recently in Alaska in an attempt to outlaw bear hunting. However, the grassroots efforts of the hunters, fishermen, and women of that state soundly defeated those attempts. These groups have now targeted the people of Michigan, our traditions and our economy.

The Hunting Heritage Defense Committee has one purpose: to educate and coordinate people interested in the issue. All of us will speak with one voice in telling these outside groups that the people of this state will uphold the long-standing traditions of hunting and fishing in Michigan.

To accomplish this we will be holding informational events coupled with voter registration drives across the state. Our presence at the 97th American Casting Association National Tournament in August at Cabela’s is just one such event.

September 9th HHDC will sponsor a Game Dinner hosted by the Jackson County Outdoor Club, with menu provided by Dixie Dave, famed wild game chef as featured on Mike Avery's Outdoor Magazine television show and guest speaker, Former State Representative, Susan Tabor.

We urge all groups as well as individual sportsmen and women to join the Hunting Heritage Defense Committee in preserving such an important part of Michigan’s heritage by joining us at Cabela’s August 6, 2005.

Well, I am. :)

We could still use some volunteers for Saturday.

A few people have asked what HHDC is. It is a political ballot committee formed purely to raise funds to fight HSUS and other radical animal rights activists who are trying to ban dove hunting (and all other sports shooting eventually.) It will be dissolved once the ballot question is decided next year.

We have an email list where we discuss this. If anyone is interested and we can confirm you are interested in helping instead of hurting this, we'd be glad to add you to the list.

Another committee is also being formed by USSA, and several other national groups to also fight this iniatitive and we will be working closely with them to pool resources.

That's all I can think of right now. If anyone has any questions, just ask.

We do need your help, both in time and financially. HSUS has already contributed hundreds of thousands of dollars to this and will be pouring more into it. They need a win here and we can't afford to give it to them. I hope you will all read the FAQ on the michiganhunting.org website.

Thanks.

Had a lot of fun, sold a few tickets, signed up some new voters, got a few donations, got the word out, etc.

Cabelas is great to work with. They set us up in a great area, hung our extra banner up over the stairs and were incredibly accommodating and helpful to us. They've offered us a table any weekend we want..we just have to find the people to staff it. I'd like to make this a monthly event, but need people willing to put in a few hours to make this happen. Any takers?

Morning would be best..all my volunteers for this weekend seem to be a bunch of sleepy heads. :)

But later is good, too.

They're open 8-9 I think..but we'll probably only have the table 9-5..its usually pretty slow at other times. I'll be there at 8 or 8:30.

We'll be there before 9am. Hoping to drag the wife, and my buddy agreed before I twisted his arm completely off.

Woohoo! More morning people!

If you don't mind then, I'm going to tell Jeanne she can come in a bit later. She's kind of grumpy in the mornings and she already yells at me a lot. :)

She's a great friend but not before mid-day.

Thanks for the help! Cabelas once again was great to work with.

We'll be there again Sunday, September 4, if anyone wants to come along. You get a vendor discount if you help out at the table which is a bonus!

Btw..Todd, the friend of the "girl" came back this afternoon and apologized for her, which was kind of cool, if unneccessary. He said she was a little bummed she hadn't been able to get us to see the error of our ways (hehe.)

(You also missed where I tried to create competition for Larry by doing my own taxidermy. I made the Great Michigan Stick Chicken out of a feather duster and some office supplies. Very realistic. Even Larry was impressed. I could tell!)

Barb,
Had a good time. Was very encouraged, overall by the responses.

Heck, I was embarrassed for the guy. A friend like that wouldn't be a friend
any more. I almost thought she was just pulling our chains. Especially with when she insisted she never sees doves here. Heck, we saw over 200 just on the ride home.

I will definitely be at the banquet with the family, and try to get out to some more of the events. Will be tough once Sept rolls around. And we definitely need to get you and Jeane and the boys out on a dove hunt this fall. It says a lot about the hunter population in general, when two ladies who have never hunted put more effort into protecting our hunting rights than 90% of the "hunters" out there.
