Expose him to everything you can, but keep it fun. Let his confidence build on walks/runs through the woods, fields, etc. If you can beg, borrow or steal a quail or a pigeon, do it. Let the pup get excited around birds and then start taking him to places where he can find wild birds. Once he's bird crazy get him introduced to gunfire and teach him that guns mean birds and birds means fun. Worry about commands and manners later, just let him be a pup for a little while. There are a ton of books and videos out there, but take them all with a grain of salt and use what you feel like using... Best of luck!!

I am not trying to be sarcastic here, but have you ever looked into buying a book or video about training as has been suggested to you before. If its a money issue, go to the library, they may have something. You obviously want to train your dog, but asking for opinions won't work as you will get many different thoughts on what to do and all that will do is confuse you. You need to establish a game plan and stick with it. Get yourself a dog training book or video or join the NAVHDA organization. For the price of a membership, they will send you a book and video on training that will be of far greater help then all the good but varied opinions people have.

You could also go to a bookstore and read the magazines about pointing dogs there. If you don't have teh money to join NAVHDA right now try surfing around their website and you may find a PDF version of their training book. For some reason I keep thinking that it is online.

I offerered some free romps here in Bay City... I made it out this morning... and possibly again tonight... at 3 months... get them outside and fill them nostrils up with anything and everything. Make sure the dog is following you and not vice versa... invest $25 into a book... and $30 into a PDJ subscription.
