Well, at least one flock survived the hay baling. Nothing like evading a discbine and baler to build character! They popped up out of the corn and flew into the acre patch of weeds/grass we leave just for that purpose. With the recent rains, the hayfield will soon grow enough to give them another 15 acres of cover, along with the thick fencerow that joins our property to a 30 acre swamp/spring/creek across the gravel road. Grow you little rascals!!!...Scott

I just seen my first Pheasant of the year and first in a while around here.Had a rooster fly over my car on M-59 and Garfield by the Macomb Community College.Hopefully it's a sign that maybe our Pheasants are making a little come back in my neck of the woods.I sure would like to be able to get my G.S.P. on some birds close to home......

This is the first year in awhile that I have'nt seen any birds along the back roads in our weekend jaunts up to Caseville. Usually we see a half dozen or so.

We must be lucky here in my neck of the woods, I see pheasants all the time. Guess I shouldn't take it for granted.

Ed you should not take it for granted because I am afraid that the CRP in your county is disapearing fast for a couple of reasons and with out CRP you will not have the birds you have now. There will always be some birds, but not like you are seeing. Lenewee County is losing thousands of acres of CRP a year, this is due to poor CRP contract renewal along with Large Dairy farm leasing out land by the minute. Most of the CRP contracts expire between 02 and 07. They are not maxing out the sign up in your area very well either.....The very East end of Lenewee county has the River Raisin and CREP sign up is strong - but the West End of the county and Hillsdale county do not have any water ways to get CREP in.....CREP is the buffer strip program along water ways....Bear Creek has better info than I do on this subject in your area.

My dad said when he drove out to our property up in Clare that a hen flew acrossed the road, followed be 10/12 little ones and then the rooster was standing along side the road. . . .should be able to bag a woodcock, grouse, and pheasant all on the same day on the same property this year. I guess our work is paying off and the select cutting done last year and plantings will help more than just the deer. We have always had a nice pheasant population about 1/2 mile away, now they are moving our way. . .I guess "IF you build it, they REALLY will come" :)

I seen a hen last week standing in a fresh cut wheat field ...all alone !!
I don't think that is a good sign. She should have had some little ones.!

Ted, there is a nice trail system back there that you can run your dog on. There are a few small fields, thickets, creeks and woods. I took Tech there a lot as a pup. There is a small herd of deer back there as well so if your dog needs any type of deer breaking you should come across them if you hit the whole area.

Just give me a call before you head out. If I can make it I would be happy to show you around the area.

500 acres just a ways from Cabelas. Sounds likes it's just me and the owners son? From what I've been told, more hens and roosters, and if it's like last fall, this should be a great fall! I'm very grateful, last year was the first time in thirteen years, and just stumbled on this new huntin area, lots of big deer down in that area as well, at least thats what I've been told!

I was able to get out at o dark thirty Saturday morning with the two dogs and had a good 2.5 hour run. Sad to say but the field which would produce a dozen plus pheasants during the early season runs last year only produced 2, a rooster and a hen. No little ones which was a surprise. Hopefully this is not an indicator and the birds were just in a different area that day.
