A neighbor has a z-max with premier rest, hha sites, 12 carbon arrows, 2 trophy hunter releases, in a case. I really don't need another bow, but always thought I'd like a Mathews. You can't tell this bow has ever been used. He wants $550. Seems like a good buy. What do you guys think?

The Z-max is far, far from a new model. I'd say $550 is pretty high. They are selling last years models all set up for that price and sometimes less.
Check out www.archerytalk.com for an extensive list of bows for sale.

I bought my z-max 6 years ago, used form a friend for $250. I think he only paid like $375 brand new. I agree $550 is a bit steep, even set up. I would think in the 3's would be more like it..all set up. The guy I bought mine from upgrades every 1 or 2 years.
It's a good bow, but nothing like their new products. I have taken many animals with it, Bear, grouse, Deer, coyote, fox, squirrel, racoons...ect. It has paid for itself in my eyes..It is about time to upgrade, well..maybe one more year.

Yeah, a buddy has a Z-Max, bought it when they first hit the market 6-7 years ago. He is very succesfull with it, just can't convince himself he needs a new one, even though he thinks about it every year. They are a good bow.

I've owned virtually all of them and have had my favorites along the way...as well as a lot of the factory pros around the country. I can honestly say that the Z-max has been one of the best hunting bows Mathews has had and with my experience I can only say it is topped by the LX, and possibly the Switchback but I haven't had time to play with mine yet. The Ultra and Ultra II was also on par with the Z-Max.

It will be faster than all the popular hunting bows Mathews has right now, including the LX and Switchback, and probably as shootable, although a little louder than the Switchback, but not as good all-around as the LX.

Average forgiveness, above-average speed. Many say speed isn't important, and rightfully so on the surface, but consider that a 10fps faster bow can be shot 5#'s lighter to equal another in speed, or KE....some are 12-14fps slower for new bows, so this can be a huge advantage during the late season.

Just some thoughts, but if you can get a good deal on one, I wouldn't hesitate...you won't be held back in performance. However, don't confuse this with the "Z-lite", which has an angled cable gaurd...big differance in both cam and shootability. The Z-Max has the max-cam, which was Mathews longstanding great Cam.

I paid about 600 in '97.
I like it. I will be handing it down to my boy next year and getting a new bow.

As for $550, that sounds a bit steep, guess it depend on accessories, like a pollington etc.

Oooops, I guess I was wrong there. I don't recall it being 600 though..
I know I paid 250 for the bow, JUST the bow, no access..

Yeh, I got jacked on the price. It was 475 when I first looked at it, but I went to another shop to check out the Oneida's. When I went back the price was up around $750 by the time I added quiver, stabalizer, dozen arrows, so the bow cost about $600, but well worth it.
