Wulp, from the man who gave you Capt: Dans Spoon Harnesses Rigs, comes yet another walleye catching wonder. The Capt: Dans Squid Wiggle Disc. You all may remember when I tied them up late last winter, with the idea that the action of the Wiggle Disc combined with the bulkiness and attraction added by the squid, just might work on the Bay for walleyes. Well, do they ever WORK!!.

Truth be known, I ran a 1/2 day charter on Wednesday the opening day of the PWT that I didn't mention earlier because I wanted to make sure it wasn't a fluke. I did so with a friend Wednesday, and he agreed to let me experiment a little with these Wiggle Discs teamed with Pa's. We weighed 5 fish and we had just a little over 23 pounds for the 5 hour catch. Now today I decided to take it a step further with my brother and his wife aboard, and ran these same discs with 2 ounce Keels and they kick ***** again, but even better than Wednesday. 45 and 55 back from "H" buoy to the mid 47's and back. We boated about 20 walleyes one cat. Two walleyes in the 8 pound class and the rest all dandy's. Stay tuned for other things I plan on experimenting with if I get the chance. :tdo12:

Ozzy.

I also was getting (tough bite) reports from my contacs calling me on the Cell. I don't talk on the radio much, but would answer anybodys hail or call. I also don't usually share immediate (Location) info on the radio for obvious reasons, but would share as much as I could with friends from this board. :chillin:

Keep us posted on the new trick there, Capt. Dan. Good catch for sure. I played around between the Black Hole and the 47's myself too. Experimented with a Hot-N-Tot / harness three-way set up on the port side and a Pa's with harness / spoon harness three-way on the starboard. Varied colors between Chartruese (of course !), Red/White, Perch, Blue/Silver and a solid Orange double blade harness I tied up. Everything came out about equal on action. From a point a mile and a half south of the Black Hole to the middle of the Black Hole I brought in 16 'eyes, all short. Had some good marks in the hole but no hook ups, when I turned out and went toward the 47's, caught four more shorts and one keeper about 17". Farm animals and cats were along as usual. With the harnesses I tend to stay a bit toward the slow end of the scale. Maybe I need to get into some more plastic so I can kick it up a notch to keep the trash off the hook ? Fun day anyway, burned up real well, dang bugs drove me off sooner than I would have liked to come in. Beauty day. :) :fish2:

Bob.

I'm making the leaders about 30", the same as I do for my spoon harnesses. My best speed yesterday was .09 on the speed wheel. I'm heading out right now for a 1/2 day trip or until that crap weather they predicted moves in. Going to (hopefully) start where I left off yesterday. I'll report back in this afternoon.

If I wouldn't have seen it with my own two eyes I never would have believed it. Nice catch Dan we ended up with 9 fish largest being 28 inches but it took untill 6pm. We just couldn't hang for the 10th as the biting flys came out and I was too tired to deal with it. Saturday was a great day for us though with a limit catch by 2pm no hogs just good eaters 16 -22inches....Jimmy

Those look pretty wild dan, you gotta keep us posted on the results. I took 2 kids out on sunday and ended up with 31 total fish only 7 keepers. All on crawlers, we were fishing around the 47's and a little northwest :)

Stopped at Franks yesterday after my charter and picked up some Mini-Squids in Bulk Pac's. Had some Wiggle Discs I tied up without the squid bodies, and I figured if I could downsize the Squid head, the "wiggle" action and "vibration" might become even more pronounced. Plus, I wouldn't have to trim the legs off on these, like the bigger version. Heres the results on paper anyway. Notice the biger ones to the right. They were the ones I was using Sunday. I'll get these wet in a couple days when Mother Nature gets past her next Tissy-Fit on the Bay. :p

And on a lighter note. A Charter Captain fishing Lake Erie, who bought some of my spoon rigs this past spring, just today sent me a picture of how they are working for him. Man...I wish they worked that good for me on a regular basis. :)

Dan, just reading back, are you tipping the squid with a crawler?

Dan,

Are you purchasing all the equipment for your rigs at Franks? They look pretty neat and according to your pictures they do work! Just wanted to let you know your spoon rigs continue to take the majority of my fish so far... Lost something yesterday I believe on the confusion spoon that broke my line. This fish was holding tight to the bottom and then all of sudden it broke. Took a few more fish on a greasy chicken wing spoon off a 1oz snap. The only trouble I am having is I cannot get any thing on the slider rig yet.

Tommy.

Yup. I didn't realize that none of the pictures clearly show that, but yes I am putting meat on them. I tie the two hook rigs using #6 wide bend Eagle Claw Lazer sharp hooks and with 17 pound vanish. Franks will hopefully soon have the Wiggle Discs in all sizes. He already sells the bulk Squids, beads and hooks, so you should be able to whip some up yourselves soon.

It might not hurt if you guys called Franks, asked for Pete and hinted about them hurrying the order for the Wiggle Discs. This is something new and they tend to drag their feet weighing the risks. Did the same thing with my spoon rigs. Now yesterday I see they only have about 2 dozen left from the original 300 I sold them this spring. Fishermen will buy things that work, when they work, and they want it right now. So dragging your feet losses sales. :tdo12:

Tom.

Not sure why, but using them as sliders is not producing for me right now like they did earlier in the season as well. That Charter Captain from Lake Erie runs them straight off the boards with weight forward stuff like you have been doing, and cleaning up with them. Who knows...maybe something has changed we don't percieve.

Dan, does the line go through the disk and stop at the front hook? I pretty much tie my harnesses the same way as you, just a little confused as to the disk. Thanks,Tommy

Tommy here's a link http://www.wigglefin.com/

so frustrated after sunday on the bay, 1 keep for 20+ dinks. then to come home and read capt's report on ..what....squids.

Capt. remember when I pm'd you about the discs, some of my friends in Minnesota have been tying some killer looking squid/flies out of some very neat materials (not rubber), I tied them into some harnesses minus the discs and they have yet to see water, need to get on with the experimenting quickly I guess. I'll see if I can get you a picture I want to see what you think of them.

10 minutes and the harnesses were picked clean...I think it was more like 5 minutes. Set 4 rods, go back to rod 1, check them all, repeat. All for dinks what a bummer.

Scotty.

I'm half thinking that if a guy attached one of those smaller Hoochie Mama's in front of a plane squid or fly harness (minus the Wiggle Disc) that might also work pretty well. Then again maybe not. But the walleye for the most part seem fearless this season, and trying something so bulky would have been out of the question last year I think. But rather it's their hunger or their competitive nature with more preditors in the system this year, they are on the snap for sure.

was out with you guys in the same area sunday all day with two nice fish and about fifty whities/sheepies/smallies/cats and a 37 inch pike. fished six rods all day with meat, plastic, dipsey/spoons, and even a few floating lindy rigs. eyes came off reel slow troll 1.0-1.2 anything faster and all we caught was garbage. saturday gonna run the kids a little farther north. anyone try small dodgers with the smaller horsefly's for the wallys, gonna try sat.so i can get the stench of sheepies and cats off my line.

Griz.

You hit on a subject that (even though not proven) is in my opinion a fact. Whenever I catch a catfish and it slimes the line (as they often do) I cut that section off and re-tie. And that includes anything from Jigs to crankbaits. I've had those lines that get slimed go absolutley dead as far as game fish go. The trash fish keep hitting it, but the game fish seem to get harder to catch on those particular lines.

Dan its starting to sound like all the old salmon fishermen are converting over to walleyes. Spoons, squids, next thing you know your going to start catching them on dodgers. Hey whats the smallest j-plugs they make and does it come in Goby colors? Thanks now its off to Franks for squids and a rig tying weekend. Keep up the good info.

SHH, you're giving away my secret! I did that a couple weeks ago on Erie. The mayflies were just starting, so I put one in front of a mayfly nymph from my flyfishing gear. Yes, it did catch fish, but the spoons far outfished it. Haven't had the chance to run it again since.

Well, com'on Todd.

Start sharing some of this stuff with your fellow Nimrods. You know what's funny. I posted the news about the Squid Wiggle Discs on other boards and a few of the responses were, "So what's new" and "We've been using them for quit a while now".

Is that right? So why haven't we heard of it before this? That's an easy answer Huh. That would level the playing field, and hinge your success with your own basic fishing knowledge and skills. Don't want to do that. :bloos:

I'm pretty open about what I'm using. Never posted that one because it really didn't kill the fish, and the jury is still out on it. If I work out a good program with it, it will get posted here. Right now, I have to wait for my outboard to get back from the shop, and decent conditions for fishing. My 14' isn't the most ideal Erie rig going.

MORE WHAT?

They never did carry any Plane Wiggle Discs. Only a few of the Chuckle Heads for the salmon fishermen. I and the Wiggle Discs rep has been working on Pete to get some in before this. I think now he might be more receptive to stocking them. :chillin:

Received the confimation from "wigglefin.com" today of my order shipping out. Purchased a few packs of the clear and chartruse "Action Disc Series II" to start off with. Just couldn't wait for Franks to make the move, so I went to the source. Can't wait to whip up a few varities that I have in mind and give 'em a shot. Most likely will be hitting the Bay Friday and Saturday so hopefully they'll be here by then to give a workout.

On a more sad and horrifying note :tdo12:  , I have found that my lower end seals are worn and I'm collecting a small amount of water now when out. This is not good. I've never worked on this type of thing, it's a 115 HP Evinrude. Anybody have any words of advice ? I'm bumming bad. I can't stand the thought of being without my boat for a period of time now, I know I should not be using it the way it is, but I'm on vacation right now through the 17th. I can't believe my bad luck.

I'll answer your problem in this fasion. I turned my ankle a few years ago. Wife said go to the Doctor and get a brace until it heals. Na....it'll be O.K. Next my knee started hurting because I was favoring my ankle. Then my hip. Then my back started giving me trouble because of my hip. After a few of days, the whole left side of my body was shot. Get it fixed by a professional NOW. ;)
