View Full Version : An odd Pike rig...

While in Houghton Lake recently, I picked up about an eighteen inch leader that was equipped with a rather large hook (2/0 ?) and a treble hook. It also has a spinner blade set ahead of the hooking rigs. I have two problems with this. One is that the two hooks are set about twelve inches apart and finding a twelve inch sucker minnow is no small task. Were I to leave the slack hanging on a smaller chub, there would be a chance for it to snag on something. My other, bigger problem is that the entire rig is leader and the weight of the minnow is liable to make the spinner blade point upward, negating any spinning action that may be possible with the movement of the minnow or with a current. Now, am I missing something or is this thing poorly designed. Methinks that for someone to go to the trouble of making these things on somewhat of a large scale and to be marketing them at stores would, normally, mean that they know something of the art of pike fishing.

Am I dead wrong?

Thats a quick strike sucker rig for muskie fishing. Whan I used to use live bait I preferred a sucker about 16-18" long and a volleyball sized releasing bobber. Just shorten the length between the two hooks and catch your own bait.

Is it designed for a slow troll then? I still don't understand how the spinner would be of any use unless trolling in which case, wouldn't trolling with live bait over oxygenate their gills and kill them?

from what i understand, the spinner is just there to make it a "lure" in canada so they can use it.
