Well, Friday and Saturday nights, the fishflies were coming down like snow-absolutely an incredible sight. We were standing on the dock about 10:00 PM and you could hear a constatnt beackground noise of the fish sucking the flies off the surface-nature is wonderfull!!

I didn't fish much, wanted to run the new boat (1995 Grady White Tournament 192-WOW!!! what a ride!!).

Anyway, the hatch really made the fishing tough for all the guys I talked to-(with maybe one exception). The white bass are schooling around the reefs and rocks in the evening making for some great kid pullage. The walleye are real spotty-some were caught but the guys had to really work for em (too to darned hot for me). The best I talked to was one boat with 2 men and 2 women on board who fished off the east side for 2 hours Saturday evening-in shallow. They had 3 'eyes 2 of which were 8 lb class on Pygmies. They told me that they were there the entire week before and caught less than 10 total-fishing every day.

Perch action was real slow also. Talked to several boats and it was pretty stinky. Best I saw was one boat fishing to the northeast-they had 32 (5 guys fished 8:30 till 4:00 for 32 (small) perch). like I said-it was pretty tough.

I'll be at the island the entire week of the 4th and I expect things to start poppin' pretty good-especially in the triangle.

KI Jim,

Thanks for the report. We had a great time in the KI area getting to know the water last weekend. What's your recommendation for eyes in August? Canadian border (F-G cans) or the Islands or Vermillion/Lorain? Looking to get another weekend on Erie yet this summer. From your other post I'm not sure I'm up for 30 mile runs to get big fish in deep water in Ashtabula/Conneaut.

Kroppe,

It depends-early or late August. Early will still have good fish around the Canadian border near Hen & Chick islands. It usually shuts down by mid August. The fish are still there, but the weeds and the fact there is so much bait in the water makes it tough. Vermillion and Lorain are heating up with good catches now (walleye & steelhead)-and this should continue through the rest of the summer. I don't know what boat you run, but I will make that area a priority starting late July. I have a 19' Grady and I can easily reach from Kellys-the Vermillion sandbar is about a 14 mile run due east from KI.
