Hi Bill,

Guess what...you're too late, they were all here this past weekend!

Just kiddin' on being late - not kidding on the fish over the weekend. I was out on the bay on Sat morning and didn't do very well, only to hear another who did figure it out - location, location, location. Folks did really well on Sunday while some of us floated around on Hubbard passing time. The key was to move around a bunch until you found fish. If the fish were in this past weekend, they will be here over the 4th.

There are reports of decent catches of walleyes all the way up to Middle Is off of Rockport. There are finally fish showing up throughout the system. I plan on hitting the bay a bunch during the upcoming weekend as long as the wind allows. I might even try to get out to some new remote spots, who knows. Day bite or night bite can work - I'm planning on sleeping at night.

No real secrets - hit the structure - shallow and deep and move. Guys are getting fish in the day in the same general areas as they are getting them at night. You may want to follow the warmer water if the wind blows and sets up a temp profile.

Good luck.
Bob

Lake Trout, Steelies and Kings...oh my! This post is about green fish with teeth - no slimy ones allowed! Just kiddin'.

I know some guys a month or so back were doing very well on lakers out of Rogers - not sure lately, though. Talked to a group who fished out of Rockport at the cleaning station in Alpena - they went through numbers of lakers below the length limit and managed a couple legal ones. They also had 2 salmon - a 6# and 8# king - said the 8# one had a head like a 16# and an emaciated body. Seems like laker fishing is the best bet if you must chase the slippery ones.

The DNR creel census girl said that very, very few salmon have been taken. Looks like it may be the fall with returning fish from Lake Michigan for decent salmon action. Who knows?

I just can't understand why folks wouldn't want to come over to the dark side and fish with us...a limit of 'eyes is weighing more than a limit of lakers and kings this year. We do accept new members...on the dark side  .

Good luck,
Bob

TB Walleye:
Tell you about the walleye fishing...it can be good. Toss an anchor in the back of East Bay Ed's boat and he'll take you to some decent spots. The bite has held off for awhile, but over the past few weeks it has been good when the weather allows. At a local tournament a couple of weeks ago, folks caught fish up and down the north shore, around the river mouth, grass island area, etc - fish were fairly spread out. Look for the structure and fish the area - you should eventually connect. You will also find some right out from Rockport and south of Presque Isle.

Esau Walleye:
Never fished Esau, but always wanted to - there has been much effort for stocking it with fish raised by the DNR/Thunder Bay Walleye Club over many years. Lots of fish have gone in - not sure how much pressure it gets or the survival rate of the walleyes. You fish it much? Not many folks in the club have fished it either, not sure why.

Good luck,
Bob
