A quick question for you guys. I have not bought my hand line reels yet. I am headed out right now to the Detroit river for some eyes. Will a 3 way rig be effective for trolling in the river. I will post results later.

Three-ways will work, however with some of the current you may be fighting, you'll end up having to use some seriopus weight on the end of your line. Of course, if your using three-ways and control drifting the currents, you should be just fine with a reasonable amount of weight. Depends on the offering you use on the end of your three-way too of course. experiment and we'll wait for the report, Good Luck ! (pics please, we live for pics when we're not fishing ! :D )

I too want to hear about your experience since the river is in my backyard.

Did not do real good with the 3 way set up. Had one good rip and that was it. Will have to invest in some hand lines. :) Good news is I did get into some fish. After I lost a plug near the Ren Cen, I had a pole in the boat rigged with a 3/4 oz pink jig, so I decided what the heck, threaded a nightcrawler on there and had a fish as soon as it hit the bootom. From about 11-12 went through 2 dozen worms, landed 12, kept 5, smallest 13 biggest 17. Ran out of worms tried gulp for awhile, but they were'nt having it, called it a night around 12;30

I've done that quite a bit with good success. It's called "pullin' plugs".

You need a Med. Hvy to Hvy Flippin' stick with 30 lb test Fireline. Attach a standard handline "shank" and a 6 - 8 oz weight.

Use leaders w/ plugs or spoons and go upstream a bit slower than you might normally go handlining.

I have taken fish over 8 lbs on this setup.

I use 3 ways and BB all the time and are very successful. Troll down stream slow 1.0 to 2.0 mph, with harnesses, spoons and Raps. Try it, you will like it!!!
