As far as I remember, Sauger is a member of the Walleye family and Pickerel is a member of the Esox family. Canadians often refer to Walleye as Pickerel. In either case, I'm sure everyone here knows what this gentleman is refering to. I haven't fished the SCR so I'm no help with a report. BTW, welcome to the site. :)

My son who is 11 caught 7 last night and 9 3 nights before that.We have been fishing along the board walks with twister tails--white or pearl. The drift fishing from the boats has been outstanding and the handliners as well. You will have to catch many fish to get your limit--Lots of undersize.legal is 13 inches in the river and 15 in the lake.Give a call or pm if you need more info than this. And welcome to the site

Shadow, I think he's refering to Lake Huron the size limit there is 5 and 15". Lake St Clair and the St Clair River are 6 and 13".

From what I've been hearing everyone from algonac to Lake Huron is doing well. Alot of fish caught but not BIG. Seems like it doesn't matter what method (chugging, whipping, hand lining, jigging or the wall) you choose everyones getting them.

Just being a smart *****. When at a restrurant, if they have "pickeral" on the menu I ask for walleye. The waitress will come back and say "we donn't have walleye". We all get a good laugh from that.
Canadians and the old old farts call them pickeral. Probably because thier fathers and granfathers did. My FIL said he used to catch "sunbass" when he was a kid. Upon further questioning found out they were bluegill and other sunfish family which are of the bass family.

No biggie,
The first year I fished up in Port Huron I never realized there was a difference in the regs, had many nights that I had 13 or 14 inchers in the well. OPS!:yikes:

Yep, Ed. That naming works for eastern Ontario and Michigan. The term "Pickerel" isn't used much in Ohio, Indiana or Illinois, then picks up again in Kentucky, Tennesee, Alabama and Georgia. Then it is used for the Chain Pickerel, which is a much smaller species of fish than the Northern Pike.
Walleye, Sauger and Saugeye are common names in Wisconsin, Minnesota, Illinois and Iowa, especially along the Mississippi River.
The term "Pickerel" was used much more from the 1920's thru the 1950's, before we realized that we had to use different names because the presentations could vary widely depending on which species you were after. I've caught walleye in 9 feet of water, saugeye at 15 feet and sauger in 35 feet of water all on the same day on the Mississippi.
