View Full Version : Carbon Arrows and Adhesive?

I bought some more carbon arrows and while tightening my heads the inserts slipped and came right out, on every arrow. I have since then cleaned out the inside of the shafts, inspected them for any splitting, roughed up the inside of the shafts, and have tried other adhesives with the same results.
Can anyone give me the name of a "GOOD" adhesive that will hold and won't break loose before I even get them finger tight?
Thanks in advance

Denatured alchohol or the equivalent should be used to clean the inside of the shaft. Let it dry. I am currently using the SteelForce beyond Bond (without the accelerator)and it works great. No over night set up but it is a good idea. Be sure to set your arrows insert up so the adhesive does not leak intot he insert threads. It is VERY permanent and should get you back on track...

I use an extra strength epoxy, and also use rubbing alchol to prep the in side of the shafts I use a q-tip works best. I have had no problem with the arrows that put together but have had problems with the arrows that I get from the shop.

I sand the inside of the shaft lightly with 100grit sandpaper and then use Goat tuff glue on the inserts and have never had a problem with them coming out. Good luck. Mike

I use Carbond from Allied Archery supply to assemble my arrows at the shop. This is an instant setting glue (This glue stays wet until the oxygen is taken away then sets instantly) and you will pull out the layers of carbon fiber wraps before getting the insert to come out... very impact resistant and is not moisture affected.

All of the responses above are correct, here is just another variation that I use. Using a .270 cleaning bore cleaning brush ( or any of appropriate size) I clean the inside of the shaft slightly roughing it up in the process. Then using ONLY denatured alcholol (rubbing alchohol) I clean thoroughly using a Q-Tip. After drying use ONLY a SLOW cure two part epoxy ( not the 15 minute cure time stuff) applied to the correct size insert, install and clean immediately any glue squeezed out, making sure none entered the threads on the inside of the insert. Set aside for a minimum of 24 hours and you're good to go. The only way it will come out then is w/ a lot of heat or a saw, either which will ruin the shaft.
Key points, make sure you have inserts matched to your shafts, do not use acetone or anything stronger then denatured alchohol and do not use a fast set epoxy it expands too quickly on drying and will either damage your shaft or push the insert partially out.
