I’m posting this for the neighbor.

He just bought a new used boat. When I was over looking at it he pointed out that their was a little sticker that looked like the motor takes a 100:1 oil mix. He had asked the original owner and he was told that he had always used a 50:1. He’s concerned and I told him to use that new synthetic oil and that it cover all ratios. Nevertheless, is there a true 100:1 mix?

He has a Johnson 25 outboard the year is a 1986.

I just got a boat with an 86 Johnson 15hp and the sticker on that says 100:1, After doing some research on the net, I discovered that mechanics got a letter from Johnson/evinrude? in 88 or so to change that sticker to 50:1. So I would mix it at 50:1.

I thought that 100:1 didn't sound right either, that's why I started doing a little checking on the net. Also 2 mechanics I've talked to said that I could go 50:1.

I am interested to see if anybody else on here has the same answer.

I have the same motor on my boat. It also has the 100:1 on it. I got it from Van's in Grand Rapids and they said use 50:1

Kinda strange. Who do ya trust? I've had the motor for a year now and allways used 50:1 and everything seems to be fine.

That sticker is factory and OMC did send out a bulletin advising the 50 to one mix.it's kinda like mercruiser when they started using a new lube for their outdrives that was a-kin to ATF and a year and lots of failed drives later sent out a bulletin to go back to old school! It was for emissions and fuel economy that they tried the 100 to 1 but after it did not work in the real world they did a 180,,this is when the VRO's (variable ratio oilier)came in on the bigger motors,,,they vary the fuel mix from 50 to 1 -to- 100 to 1 depending on running conditions.
If you like that motor and want to keep it mix at 50 to 1

dtg and TONGA, thanks for those replies. I'll remove that sticker today. If all goes well, my boys will be using that motor 20 years from now and I'd hate to have them see the sticker and start using 100:1.
