A friend here at work has a motor he's trying to get going. It starts, runs on full choke, but dies instantly when the choke is turned off.
Also the motor runs really hot, with the water spitting out. The water coming out comes out very hot as well. I'm no mechanic, I told him I thought it might be an impeller issue, or a clogged cooling system. Any have any thoughts on these 2 questions.
Another tidbit of info. that he just gave me. The motor has been sitting, how long, I don't know.

Thanks

ok as for running the idle circuit in the carb is probably all blocked off so the carb should probably be rebuilt, that is from what you tell me anyway... as for the over heating,,well it sounds like the motor has sat so long that the impeller is now dry-rotted and breaking up,,,it is probably clogging some cooling passages ,,the impeller change is not to bad but getting the cooling passages unblocked can get ugly and involve some major surgery in some cases...
Again let me say that this is what I am getting from your description,,,it is impossible for me to say for sure sitting on this side of the computer!

Be sure to pull the top off of the thermostat and replace and clean out what ever needs to fixed. Along with the impeller change, change the grommet in the top of the impeller housing if old and stiff. Look at the water intake screen under the cavatation plate, make sure it is open and the plug is in the end of the intake tube. If the gas tank is 30 -40 years old, make sure it is not full of rust and crud, and maybe a new hose is in order. Have fun!
