Ok let me throw this one out here and see what comes up....A friend of mine has just received an older pntoon with the above mentioned motor. Now this motor in the past always ran like a champ but now has been sitting for 3 years. He just wanted to dump out the gas and throw it in the water but i advised him to get some advice first....
I know the basics..Probally going to rebuild the carb and of course drain and refill the lower unit...but what about the Impellar should that be changed (If so how on this motor?) and are there seals on it somewhere that would need to be changed??? I have never done much work to outboards but i am confident enough with a little instruction I could tear it apart and put it back together if needs be. any and all info would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance
Joe

I would definately change the impeller. You can find the manual to repair the outboard at your local library.

Now that would be a beautiful thing....I know i could do it but would like someone to hold my hand to get me started...service manuals aren't bad..but I need to hear from someone that has actually been there done that..let me know if you come up with anything...
Thanks
Joe

I think if you put that engine on the sea-ray kev, it will be way underpowered...
edit:
here is a link to Tonga's impeller change thread but the pics are gone but if you look in Tongas photo gallery you will find them in there.

Ok if it's a 1984,,take off the water inlet screens below the anti-cave plate,,,this will expose the shift disconnect.
You will find 2 nuts on the shift rod,,use 2 wrenches and back the top nut way off.
you will see a plastic bushing on the rod,,,you may need to pry it up with a knife or something,,,then shift the motor into forward and you should be unhooked.
Then you need to unbolt the lower from the mid and remember depending on if it's a long or a short they like to hide a bolt up under that little zinc fin that bolts to the cav plate, leave 2 bolts in 2 or 3 turns to support the lower till you are ready to slide her out,,,the when ready put one hand under the lower so it does not fall out onto the floor and remove the 2 bolts with the other hand.
Then just slide her out nice and strait.
You will find the water pump housing at the base of the drive shaft,,remove the bolts and slide the housing up and off the shaft,,,Keep a firm grip on the shaft with one hand and hold down on it while you do this because you do not want to pull the shaft free of the gear in the lower (THIS WOULD BE BAD!)
Now you will find the impeller either still on the shaft or in the housing you just pulled off,,,either way find the key-way because you will need it.
while it is apart check out your friction plate and pump housing to see if it is worn badly(not likely in a motor that new) it is also a good time to check out your seals for your tubes to see if they are shot ( very possible,,if so replace,,by the way gaskets for the plate and housing are cheep)
Ok now lube up that new impeller with something, grease, vaseline,,I like assembly lube but the important thing is you don't want that impeller dry for the first start up!
Now slide the new impeller down over the shaft and make sure the key is in place,,you know so it will go around with the drive shaft lol.
Now slide the pump housing down onto the impeller while turning the driveshaft clockwise and she should spin right into the housing,,,I prefer to do this nutty thing with a zip tie but I am not in the mood to try to type out an explanation of it.
Now put the bolts back in,,you want them tight but don't get crazy.
Now make sure the up-tube is clean and smooth a thin coat of lube on the tube seal is a nice touch.
Then slide that lower back it nice and straight and make sure the up tube goes into the pump housing, bolt her up and re-hook the shift disconnect.
Now get her in some water fire her up and make sure she is pumping water and running cool.( if she seems to be running cool but you are not getting a good stream from the tell-tale try a pipe cleaner!)
Sorry got no pics handy at the moment.

from your first post it sounds like you have a handle on it other than what you had mentioned..
A good battery and good clean connections.
