Wildthang, welcome to Michigan Sportsman! Were abouts are you from? In my area the bass have been slow, big time. They won't bite a thing and they are deep.

I'm from Spring Lake, over by Grand Haven and muskegon. I frequently fish up by your area though, on Six Lakes which i must say is a phenomonal fishery.

SK, I have never really fished 6 lakes before, but I have heard of it. What other lakes do you fish in my area?

Oh man, next summer, that is one lake you should put on your list to fish. Not only does it have a tremendous bass population that not many people realize because most of the angling pressure up there is focused on panfish (i.e mostly crappie and blue gills). There is also some great pike. A friend of mine brought a 45 in. monster out of there a couple years ago. To add to it, its a no wake chain of lakes, so its even more angler friendly. But to answer your question, since i can't drive quite yet, i haven't fished any other lakes up there besides that chain of six lakes. I've heard of some tremendous action on a bass lake? but we belong to a travel trailer resort called Pleasure Point which is right on fourth lake, so i can fish all weekend. Good luck and hope to talk to ya soon.

SK, sounds as if you are my age. That lake is starting to become a must fish. I love to bass and pike fish! I also like to catch some gills for a nice fry once in a while. Is that lake pretty good ice fishing? Thats prob when I will try because I have been hunting lately.

I'm not exactly sure how the lake is for ice fishing. I haven't fished it during the winter yet. The park is open april through october 1 so that's the season i'm fortunate enough to fish the lake. I've gone by during the winter and the lake is frozen over pretty well. My guess would be it probably wouldn't be a bad ice fishing lake at all.

I am going to try it. How deep are the lakes? And which area would you suggest for tip-up fishing?

Exactly what times of the year are bass in the shallows?

Any time during the summer really. I will first start out trolling for a bit then switch to a cast and retreive. Then move to my favorite, top water. But once the water starts getting cooler they tend to move deeper. Bass come to the shallows to feed.

SKWildThang,
I have been having some great luck with smallies in the St.Clair river this summer but it is starting to slow down almost to a hault right now. I still go out every chance I get before or after work depending on the weather. Lately I have not been limiting out on bass but I still am getting 2 or 3 nice 1 to 2 Lbs smallies every outing. All bass this year have all come from shinners or worm harnesses drifting off the ledge (16-20ft). I am a big live bait fan and rarely use artifical bait (Only for Spring Pike).

Thanks, I went out yesterday and had one bite but i put a nice 5lb. largemouth in the boat. It brought back some of the thrills of summer, but we went the rest of the day without a bite. I think once you find a fish this time of year, he will be accompanied by about 4 or 5 more. I'm going to go out after this storm clears sometime this week but this unstable weather has made it really difficult to get out on the lake. Another thing is our good friends in Grand Rapids have let the seuage overflow again and all of Spring Lake, the Bayous and the Grand River have advisories saying that you should avoid any contact with these bodies of water, but that's another story.

SK, that is sad really. The rain is good, but whenever we get a good downpore and sewage gets all over. Good luck fishing.
