Hi all !

I have a 16 foot boat and older Evindrude for sale in the classified section here. Last week I got an email from someone here who was interested in it. He came and looked and decided he wanted the boat. I was in the process of loading up all the "extras" that I was throwing in with the sale when he said "Now this is going to start when I get home right ?". I replied, "Sure will, it's never given me a problem yet". Famous last words. I decided to demonstrate so I filled up a container of water and submereged the lower unit in the bucket and hooked up the battery. I then proceeded to turn the key and it turned over but slowly, popped once and then NOTHING. To make a long story short, we messed around with it for a couple of hours and I decided that it was the starter and not the battery. After some checking I found someone who said he had a used one he'd sell me for $75. I thought that sounded fair and was just about to go pick it up. But after a Google search I found a place in Eastpointe that listed a NEW starter for my '61 Evinrude for only $119 ! I went this morning and picked it up. They even installed the bracket for me. I got it home and installed it. When I hit the key, VROOOOOM ! She was running almost instantly. Well I'm rambling but just thought I'd give you guys a heads up for a place to try if you need a starter for an outboard. I think it was well worth the extra $44 for a NEW unit and not a rebuilt or used. They ship anywhere. Here's the site.

Check them out !

Tonga,

I think you do. ;)

Unfortunately, it's about an hour drive one way to get to his place. I just figured that the $$ difference between new and used was a lot less when I considered the two hour round trip into the equation.

Oh yeah, I've still got those controls for you. I may be getting out your way soon. Next time I'm going to be in your area I'll give you a shout and get your address. I can drop them off.

Thanks again for the help !

John

I was just wondering because I thought he would have swung you a little better on the price.

Tonga,

actually I didn't think the $75 was all that bad of a price for a used starter for a motor of that vintage. I was expecting a little more than that from what I've seen of other starters. I just happened to run accross that place that I listed. They've got starters for a lot of older outboards and the nice thing about the one that I picked up is that it's got four brushes instead of just two. It really kicks when I turn the key ! It's a little shorter than the original but the diameter is the same so it worked.

I'm not sure when but I'm sure I'll be out your way eventually. My sister in law has a cottage on Harsens and we usually get out there several times each summer. When I'm headed that way I'll give you a shout and get your address and drop it off. I just can't bear to throw it away ! I'd rather see it get put to use by someone that can't afford big bucks for a new one or someone restoring an older boat.

See ya soon !

John
