got a 1995 50hp evinrude that over the winter the vro system is filling the carbs with oil. fuel lines, filter and float bowls are filled with oil. the only way to get the motor to start is to drain and flush the system. then fires right up with a mushroom cloud of smoke.
anyone have any ideas on why this is happening?

Is the motor on a pontoon? We have found more of this problem on pontoons
because the oil tank is above the VRO. as they sit over the winter the gas evaporates or the motor gets stored in the tilt position, with no gas in the bowls gravity creates a siphoning effect where the oil drips in. When the bowls are full of oil it stops siphoning.

yes it is on a pontoon boat. even if it sits for a few weeks it's hard to start and blows a lot of smoke.

You could always add a quick connect to the oil line so you can unhook her when not in use,,,or if you don't mind mixing your fuel you could always remove the VRO and go back to good old fashion fuel pump with the vacuum port on the back.. your block should have a provision for the old style fuel pump on the left side.
you should see a bolt with a gasket behind it over the vacuum port and there should be 2 threaded mounting holes,,one above and one below. the you remove the VRO and lines( put them in a box in case you want to put her back on to sell the motor some day)
Then you just mount the new fuel pump, make some new lines and use you existing fuel tee to feed the carb bowls and primers.
If you go this rout let me know and I will give you a part number for a fuel pump.

thanks for the explainations. going to put a valve in the line to shut it off when not in use. and a big reminder plaquue on the dash to remember to turn the oil on.
