Perch Fishing, Colchester Ontario

Is the Perch fishing any good in Lake Erie around Colchester this time of year? The Free Press had an article about Perching off Leamington a couple of week’s back that sounded intriguing. That’s a little too far of a run with my boat, but the Colchester area is well within my range. Any information/suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Don’t know exactly when we’d be going but I will try to post a report afterwards.

Colchester is crazy with perch right now, go out to the red bouy, just out from the marina and drive around untill you find a school, drop anchor and have at it, or drift until you pick a couple up and drop anchor. We were there the other day and had steady action all afternoon.

It's not as hot every day like it sometimes can be, but there are still a lot of perch there. We generally start fishing a bit south of the red buoy that rivrat1959 mentioned. Last Saturday the better action looked to be quite a ways west. I marked a ton of fish trolling a few miles west of the harbor, and saw several boats perch fishing over there.

Thanks for the reply guys. I have a related question. I'm not very familiar with the area, but am assuming that you may have to deal with gill nets. Is this a correct assumption and are they a problem? I'm don't normally fish in locations where commercial fisherman operate.

Three weeks ago, there were nets everywhere from about Holiday Beach to Colchester. I haven't seen any in the last couple of weeks, though.

didnt really notice any nets saturday when we were out there.
We were also trolling holiday beach in about 24 feet of water and picked up 4 jumbos 12-14 inches trolling with crawlwer harnesses. so that may be an area to check also. May be running a bit bigger over there.
