went fishing with my esteemed guests and new found friends, the honorable bolodunn and a senior citizen to be named later , on friday night. launched out of sterling with an east wind. didn't mark any fish ,but the waves were building so we dropped lines in the bay. proceded to catch about 25 ,13 inch walleye ,some silvers and a white perch. could only keep 6 lines in for 10 minutes or less. every rod took hits. double rigs were hot ,hot, hot.i'd bet barry was running them today, weren,t you.i had a blast and you are welcome on my ship anytime. if anyone ever needs a second mate take bolo with you. he can set lines almost as good as express.i was very impressed . had a sat. report out of bolles that the 2-3 pounders were hitting off the spoils piles. also my charter buddies in ohio report that the bigger fish are 2-3 miles nne off west sister. he took a five man limit that weighed over 100 pounds. jets and spoons were hot.the fishing is good right now so get out there.

Trolling has its biggest advantage inallowing you to cover a lot of water in a shortperiod of time. Crankbait/spoon combina-tions can be trolled in a wide spread horizon-tally as well as vertically, allowing you tolocate walleye concentrations and pinpointtheir preferences as to color and depth.Lake Erie’s walleye dine primarily onshad and smelt. Baitfish schools and wall-eyes most often are found in a temperatureband from 50 to 70 degrees. Walleyes whichare actively feeding usually are located at thetops of the baitfish columns and your luresshould be pulled at a depth that causes themto run at this level. A depth sounder andtemperature meter, therefore, become neces-sary tools for locating the depth of baitfishBockelman Horizontal and Vertical Spreadschools as well as the depth of scatteredwalleyes.A crankbait/spoon “Double-Bait” com-bination can effectively be fished on a flatline, wire line or with the aid of a planerboard, downrigger or Dipsy Diver®. Favoredcrankbaits for "Double-Bait" walleye troll-ing are the Power Dive®Minnow, Hot LipsExpress®, Rock Walker or Speed Trap™.Spoons utilized in conjunction with theseplugs are all lightweight, high action modelssuch as the 035 Coyote™ Spoon or #4 Dia-mond King™.Diagrammed above is a rod spreadGeorge Bockelman, a successful troller outof Curtice, Ohio uses in the Western Basin asDipsy®Setup for Running "Double Baits"an example of maximum spread of lures bothhorizontally and vertically using several dif-ferent depth devices.Bockelman uses “Double-Bait” setupsbehind his Dipsy Divers®and single Coy-ote™ Spoons behind the Jet Divers™. Pro-ductive Coyote™Spooncolors include blue, purple, greenand chartreuse(see art below). Here are his specific suggestions on rigging:For the Jet Divers™, run a four-footleader behind the Jet Diver™ to a 035 Coy-ote™ Spoon. Set the port Jet Diver™ for itsdeepest dive and the Jet Diver™ on thestarboard side for a middle dive. Bockelmansuggests 17-pound solar, XT high visibilityline for easiness of observation. On the flat lines run off the port andstarboard planer boards, he uses “Double-Baits” run off 3 1/2-foot leaders attached to athree-way swivel. A Coyote™ Spoon is tiedto the end of one leader with a deep-divingPower Dive®Minnow, Hot Lips Express®orRock Walker™crankbait tied to the end ofthe remaining leader. The diving plug willpull the spoon down without any tangling. The result of trolling this rig often is twowalleyes at once! For the Dipsy Divers®, Bockelman usesdifferent settings to obtain the widest pos-sible spread (see diagram). “Double Baits”also are used behind the Dipsy’s®, except hechooses shallower running crankbaits forthis operation as the Dipsy Divers®providenecessary depth in Western Basin waters.Speed Traps™ and No. 35 Hot Shot®plugsare his favored crankbaits for this purpose.(A) Planer Board - "Double Bait"(B) Jet Diver™- Spoon(C) Dipsy®- "Double Bait"PORT SIDE1. Over the past several seasons, lures and techniques have come to theforefront which produce consistentcatches of large walleye throughoutthe traditional June through Octoberseason. The one technique which nowstands above all others in its productiv-ity is trolling with crankbait Coyote™spoon, “Double-Bait” combinations.Whether you’re walleye fishing in theshallower waters of the Western Basinor in the deep waters of the Central andEastern basins, this technique will pro-duce big dividends day-in and day-out.Published as a service to the industry by Luhr Jensen, Inc., P.O. 3-Way Swivel Setup for Running "Double-Baits"plug is attached. The second leader ends witha snap swivel to which the spoon is attached. The snap swivel aids in preventing line twistwhen faster trolling speeds are desired. Boththe snap and snap swivel provide an immedi-ate way to change lure colors without re-tying.Emrisko, Dzuro and Stevens point outtheir fondness for the new Power Dive®Min-now and Hot Lips Express®is due to the factboth crankbaits run straight, true and verydeep...a necessity to keep the diving plugdown underneath and away from the spoons.Spoons such as the 030 and 035 Coyote™Spoon or #4 or #5 Diamond King™ arechosen because of their high action and theirlightweight nature, again helping to keepPower Dive®MinnoworHot Lips Express®HOT SPOON COLORS:Same as recommended forDipsy®setup on front side ofthis bulletin. To attach the three-way swivel to theDipsy Diver®, Bockelman uses a split ringbetween the third leg of the three-way swiveland the swivel on the tail end of the Dipsy®.He then runs two 3 1/2-foot leaders off theremaining two legs of the three-way to hislures, with a 035 Coyote™Spoonon one andthe Speed Trap™ or Hot Shot®on the other.Standard Dipsy®colors are productive butmany trollers have found Metallic Purple,Metallic Pink and Metallic Green to be evenmore effective.Central Basin walleye expert and chartercaptain Andy Emrisko, out of Cleveland, fishes much deeper water than found in theWestern Basin and adjusts his methods ac-cordingly. He, as well as fellow chartercaptains Jeff Dzuro and Ron Stevens, alsoare convinced the way to go is a “Double-Bait” rig off a 3-way swivel.Crankbait choices for deep water troll-ing, however, are deep-diving models. Em-risko prefers Power Dive®Minnow or HotLips Express®plugs for Central Basin troll-ing in combination, again, with a Coyote™Spoon. He notes blues or greens are topcolor choices for his Coyote™ Spoons.Emrisko uses leaders of equal length forhis “Double-Bait” setups, as does Bockel-man. But they’re a little longer with 4- to 6-foot lengths preferred. He cautions againstusing any leader length longer than your rod,as landing a fish will be difficult. Two leadersof the same length are used because there isless chance of “leader nicking”. “Doubles”also are commonplace with crankbait/spooncombos and the equal lengths allow easynetting of both fish at the same time.Emrisko uses 20-pound leaders. He notesheavier weight leaders result in fewer break-offs and can take more abuse so, if they don’tspook the fish, why not gain a little edge?“Double-Bait” setups, as used by manycharter captains in the Central Basin utilize asnap on the end of one leader to which thePower Dive®Minnow or Hot Lips Express®them above and away from the crankbaitunderneath.Although some Lake Erie walleye troll-ers prefer to match the color of their crank-bait to the Coyote™ Spoon color, Emriskopoints out it really doesn’t seem to make thatmuch difference. What does count a lot, however, is to run several colors and changecolors regularly until walleye are caught andthen go to that color with the remaining lures. His best all-around color is Fire Tiger, fol-lowed closely by Silver/Blue Top/OrangeDiver®Snubber and a 6-foot section of 20-pound monofilament ahead of a single PowerDive®Minnow. For “Double-Baits”, attachone end of the snubber to the wire and theother end to your 3-way swivel with a snap.2) Use a backing line of Dacron or cottonon your reel before spooling on wire. Spoolit on semi-loosely. Suggested reels for wireline trolling include the Daiwa 47SH andPenn 310.3) Let out line S-L-O-W-L-Y...use yourclicker to slow rate of release.HOT PLUG COLORS:#0217 "Blueberry Muffin"#0320 Purple/ Black "Tiger"#0735 "Blue Magoo"/(Met Blue/Chart"Tiger" & "Tail"/Orange "Belly")#0785 Watermelon/Black "Tiger"#0979 Fire Tiger#3132 "Funky Chicken"/Met Purple/Chart"Tiger" & "Tail"/Cerise "Belly"Belly, Black/Purple, Chartreuse, Gold andBlack. All three charter captains agree that whileplaner boards or flat lines with a Power®DiveMinnow attached will get you down in the20- to 30-foot range, there are many in-stances in the Central and Eastern basinswhen that’s just not deep enough. In thesecases, they go to Dipsy Divers®with longleaders or wire line when extra depth isneeded.Emrisko and Frank Maraldo, both fromCleveland, won the First Annual Lake ErieOpen Walleye Tournament trolling wire lineand Power Dive®Minnow/Coyote™ Spoon,“Double-Bait” combinations. Largest of theirfive walleye on that day went 10 1/2 poundswith others in the 8- to 9 1/2-pound category. The 10- to 12-pound test wire Emriskouses is thin diameter and has very little waterresistance. This thinness also makes it virtu-ally invisible in Lake Erie waters. Unlikemonofilament, which reaches its depth po-tential when out about 100 feet, you can godeeper and deeper with wire by letting moreline out.Wire has no stretch, so even with a longline, it’s easy to hook a walleye on the strike, though the fish is several hundred feet awayfrom the boat. Because of this fact, it isadvised you NOT set the hook, as thin wirewill break at its rated strength. Walleye takenon wire line trolling gear will set themselves.Wire can be a very effective way to reachdeep water walleye. It does, however, re-quire some special equipment and care. Hereare some helpful tips:1) Because of wire line's non-stretchproperties, it is recommended you use a Dipsy4) Keep your drag loose; you have dif-ferent forces at work.5) Use a rod with hardened steel orcarbide guides. Wire will cut ceramic; and,a good roller tip guide is preferable.6) Watch for kinks; be careful!Bill Agler of Parma, Ohio is still anothersuccessful Lake Erie walleye troller. Hefocuses his efforts in the Central Basin whichstarts perking in May and produces walleyesthrough October. Agler also is a firm be-liever in the three-way swivel/”Double-Bait”setup. He uses 6-foot leaders on his outfitsnoting this length allows hooking of both thecrankbait and Coyote™ Spoon to the rodhandle when not in use.His best all-around colors include FireTiger, Gold/Green Top and Black on a sea-son-around basis. For July through Octoberwalleye trolling, Agler also likes Black/Purple, Red/White/Orange and Shad. An-other of his recommendations when using“Double-Baits” is to run six to eight of thesecombos at once to simulate a baitfish school. The prominent Lake Erie walleye troll-ers interviewed for this Tech Bulletindiffer abit on leader length, line test, method ofgetting deep, etc. All agree without hesita-tion, however, that the top trolling setup forLake Erie walleye...BIG walleye...consistsof a three-way swivel, two equal lengths ofleader, a crankbait and spoon. The “Double-Baits” of choice are LuhrJensen's Coyote™ Spoon in combinationwith either the deep-diving Power Dive®Minnow or Hot Lips Express®crankbait. All these anglers also have one othervery important thing in common: they catcha lot of walleyes!Visit our web site at www.luhrjensen.com #8822-511 Revised 050202 Litho in U.S.A.#030 & #035 Coyote™ Spoon or #4 or #5 Diamond King™ Spoon3-Way SwivelEqual leaders of 3-1/2' to 6' (Angler Preference) 20-lb. I run a similar setup, but instead of the 3 way, I use a sliding bobber stop that uses a small plastick wedge to keep it in place. That way I can adjust
the level of the spoon, or shallow diver. Also, decreases tangles, because I set the deep diver at the depth I want it, then using a speed clip with a diameter smaller than the bead, I clip to the line and let the second lure slide down. Worked great last night with us bouncing all over in my little boat. Not a single tangle, and the spoons did most of the catching.
