Square back canoe, gas or electric?
Hello everyone
First of all i am new to the site and wanted to say hello. Secondly i bought a 15 foot square back canoe this summer for hunting and was wondering if you could give me input on what type of motor to put on it. I hunt mainly marshes out of it for now and may try some lakes later on. Thanks
Jeff

I've got gas
check to see what the highest HP rating reccomended by the Manufacturer is and get it. I have a 15' sports pal squarestern with a 5hp outboard. I'm running outriggers on mine for added stability and safety.

I have a 3hp and that works great... If going by yourself will need to add some weight in front to keep the bow down.

You can use 5gal buckets filled with water, or take a hunting buddy as balast.

Most likely gas is what you want. Electrics are nice quiet but have a tough time with weeds and strong winds. Not to mention they really drain a battery fast on high
I like an electric for certain things but for all around ducking get a small gas engine

Id go with gas. Dont have to recharge that every night like you would a battery and theyre real light. A small 2.5-3.3 mercury will serve you well. Theyre quiet and good on gas too.

Gas all the way.....I've got a 2.5 susuki that's too much for my sports pal.
It's a pointed canoe, with the engine on the side I stand it right up. I need some counter weight big time. A battery weighs too much, it's a hassle taking it out every night and charging etc.

Hello
I'm new here as well.
I've got a '72 grumman with stabilizer fins bottom aft.
I run a 4 hp gas, and it suits me fine.
Enjoy your canoe, they're lots of fun and very versatile.

I would look into the air cooled 5h.p. from briggs. One of the guys on this site uses on his canoe and it works good.

Can be a little too versatile i forgot to add that you should watch the sharp turns because it doesnt take much to tip when you have a 5hp outboard powering a 80 lb canoe.

Funny you should mention that.
With the stabilizers I was talking about, with bow ballast, I can crank the handle almost 90 degrees at full throttle and all she does is gurgle and cavitate under the fins.
Hardly even causes it to list.
Neighbors got the same canoe in 19', never uses it.

Unless it is real windy. I have been running electric for the past 2 seasons and would like to upgrade to gas power.
On windy days boat control can be down right frustrating with an electric trolling motor. On nice days they OK but slow.
