Using Old Sign for Solving the Puzzle of Mature Buck Patterns

January 23, 2012

It was a beautiful thing…the beagles were howling in the background, the deer were long gone and had migrated into the deer yards, and the layers of snowbase that had accumulated through late February were deeper than a 36″ snowshoe when it was stabbed into the blanketed frozen ground below. Another great afternoon with the [...]

Whitetail Weekly, Keeping a Journal of your Hunting Season

January 21, 2012

If you follow my blog at all you have probably heard me preach a time or two on the benefits of Keeping a Journal of your Hunting Season.  I like to write more than most people so it is no surprise that I would keep a journal but even if you aren’t a fan of [...]

Buck Trails: High Powered Mature Buck Movement

January 19, 2012

*www.whitetailhabitatsolutions.com Back in 1999 I purchased 120 acres of tag alder thickets, spruce and fir swamps, and sandy loam filled 15-year-old white, red, and jack pine regeneration. To say that this parcel was “thick” was an understatement. I have to smile when my southern MI habitat management brothers suggest that, “It can’t be too thick”! [...]

Advanced Whitetail Habitat Design: Doe Bedding and Buck Bedding

January 19, 2012

Please visit www.whitetailhabitatsolutions.com The beauty of getting to hunt a few states, and walk dozens of whitetail parcels over several states each year is that I get to see patterns. Certain patterns of feeding, rutting, traveling, staging and bedding are repeated over and over again no matter what the state, and what the habitat type. [...]

Using Hunter Movements to Shoot Big Bucks on Public Land

January 19, 2012

*www.whitetailhabitatsolutions.com *2011 MI Public Land I’d like to teach you how to take advantage of a public land deer drive! You don’t drive deer? Well, neither do I. And in many public land locations, most hunters don’t drive either…at least knowingly. Here is a list of public land deer drives that you can take advantage [...]

This small buck may have been the one we kicked up. Hopefully he stays in the area and we can see him again next season.

Whitetail Weekly, Michigan Late Season Hunt – The Final Sunset

January 6, 2012

Way back on October 1st I climbed a tree in the pre-dawn darkness and was all settled in well before the first sunrise of the season got underway.  There is always something really exciting about that first sit of the year.  All the waiting is over and it’s finally hunting season, all the anticipation of [...]

Whitetail Weekly, The Off-season Starts In Season

December 31, 2011

First off, let me say that I hope everyone had a great Christmas and got the chance to enjoy some quality time with family and friends. With all the hustle and bustle that comes along with the holidays it can sometimes be hard to remember to slow down and enjoy it. Personally I seem to [...]

Rabbit Hunting

December 31, 2011

A brace of beagles makes for an ideal hunt. Rabbit Hunting – Owning the Season The snow falls as does the temperature.  After a stretch of several months with a revolving door of human activity, the fields and forests now more closely resemble a ghost town.  There’s no reason to go out there anymore.  This [...]

Whitetail Weekly, A Deer Hunters Christmas List

December 23, 2011

Dear Santa, As a man who has a soft spot for deer (reindeer in particular) it would be reasonable for some to assume that you may not be all that fond of us deer hunters. Personally I don’t think that is the case though. I think that you see us as the family oriented, big [...]

Whitetail Weekly, December Bowhunting

December 16, 2011

The Search For Survivors It’s no secret that here in Michigan by the time the calendar hits December the deer herd has taken quite a beating. They have been through a month and a half of archery season as well as a two week long onslaught from the firearms hunters. The herd is much smaller [...]
